Every dollar counts!... whether its $5 dollars or $500 dollars, no contribution I too small in the fight for the survival of our biggest & most vulnerable & voiceless residents doing some of the most important work in our community!

-From soaking up torrential rains; keeping our community cool providing shade for blocks; to helping the newest members of our tree canopy thrive & become part of the lungs of our urban forest ... our silent giants are doing their part keeping our community's Wolseley Urban Forest thrive for generations to come! Let's do OURS!

Give Here!

Dear Wolseley Neighbour:

Help us reach our initial July 2025 tree inoculation goal!

We're almost there & only need $2250 more by this Tuesday, July 22nd!

Help us make Wolseley's Save Our Elms Campaign take root! We're short by only $2250 to cover costs of Wolseley's Stage One Save Our Elms 10 year plan...

Be the one to help Wolseley's Save Our Elms Campaign take root! Every dollar counts in the fight against DED, no donation is too small or too b

There is still time to donate!

Please help us raise a final $2,250 to help cover the costs of this initial stage of Wolseley's 10-year plan!

Every dollar you can donate will get us closer to our goal!

Either go through our go-fund me link above or transfer via e-transfer to [email protected], include "save our elms" in the transfer memo.!

Help Save Our Wolseley Elms. Let's get Phase One Rooted!

We're working to save our Wolseley’s elm trees — & are inviting you to join us!

You might've found our green Help Save Our Elms leaflet in your mailbox & wondered why we are asking for your money?... Maybe you’ve seen "orange dots” on mature elms — orwitnessed huge, beautiful Wolseley elms being cut down by the City.  -Bothare because of Dutch Elm Disease (DED).

...However – Dutch Elm Disease can be prevented!

 – through inoculation with Arbotect 20-S, & we're raising funds for this community inoculation!

Fact: “Arbotect 20-S” is the only fungicide proven to provide three years of protection for elmtrees against DED. It's injected into an elm tree’s root flare. When administered by certified arborists, it's environmentally safe & highly effective.

Fact: A healthy elm, inoculated every 3 years with Arbotect 20 -S, can live over 200 years.

ACTION: We're working with an arborist strategically selecting & inoculating over30 healthy elms on Westminster or Wolseley Avenues THIS August.

REQUEST: We need your help, & there is still time to donate!

Phase I of the Campaign to Help Save our Elms is coming to a close. Our ultimate goal is $100,000. We've already raised more than $20,000 in less than two months from generous neighbours & a $5000 grant from Assiniboine CreditUnion!

THIS Tuesday, July 22, 2025is our deadline to collect funds for the Phase One inoculation cycle, as arborists need time to assess tree health, & order supplies.

We thank you — &, more importantly future Wolseley generations thank you!

Pat McCarthy-Briggs, lead, on behalf of The Wolseley Residents' Association Tree Committee

NOTE: Homeowners are welcome to inoculate trees on their property when this project is underway.

You will receive the “Wolseley project discount” (about 10%).

Contact: Simon at Green Drop: 204.771.7531 before THIS Tuesday, July 22nd

Simon is our arborist & main contact & a good partner in the campaign to save Wolseley’s elms!

It's that time of year again...

Join us for our Annual General Elections & final meeting of the year!

We have some great positions open including Vice Chair; Secretary; & Board members at large!

We'll also be welcoming documentarian, Urban forest advocate, Trees Please Winnipeg founding member & one of the WRA Wolseley Community Gardens Vimy Victory Garden founders Erna Buffie as she talks all about urban trees in a changing climate from a Wolseley perspective!
Sure to be an engaging event & we are excited to see you all there!

Saving Wolseley's Elms Project

The Wolseley neighbourhood has been long known & loved for its beautiful canopy of mature elms, particularly on our gateway streets - Wolseley & Westminster. Over the past few years, we have noticed tree after tree marked & cut down due to Dutch Elm Disease (DED). Currently, about 10-15 elms are being killed by DED each year due to DED.

If nothing is done, there will be no elms left on these streets in 10 years!

DED can be prevented! The WRA Tree Committee is seeking funding to inoculate between 150-200 mature elm boulevard trees on Wolseley’s two major streets & thoroughfares – Westminster Avenue & Wolseley Avenue – by way of a root injection treatment that would provide these trees immunity from Dutch Elm Disease for a 3-year period (following which subsequent treatments would be required).

This initiative is the first part of the WRA’s Urban Forest Strategy for Wolseley, aiming to preserve our mature elm canopy, slow the rate of DED tree mortality & in turn provide time for replanted trees to grow under a mature tree canopy.

The strategy will focus on a 10-year period (2025-2035), with inoculations occurring every 3 years.

We aim to secure long-range funding but we need your community support to get started!

ReLeaf Spring 2025 Campaign is Baaaaak!

For a limited time while supplies last grab your RIVERBANK or YARD variety tree at a special price & help keep our urban landscape green!

Order from their tree selection here while supplies last!

These are NOT boulevard trees: "Due to their size, ReLeaf trees are NOT suitable for city boulevards as they can be easily damaged by vandalism or snow-clearing equipment. Also, some of the varieties we choose for yards would not stand up to the salt & sand used on our streets in winter.

The City of Winnipeg has specific requirements about the size, species, & placement of trees on boulevards. If you would like to have a tree planted on your boulevard, contact 311 to ensure that your address is on the city's replacement list. You might also want to consider purchasing a tree for your boulevard through the city."

Biggest Reminder - Click before you dig!

"Disturbing the ground on your property to plant a tree can cause damage to a buried utility, which can result in costly repairs, injuries & even fatalities. Don’t dig until you know what’s below.

Submit your utility location request at http://clickbeforeyoudigmb.com.

Plan ahead and allow for at least 3 full working days notice before you plant. This ensures underground utilities are marked, and you are digging safely.

For more information, please consult the Homeowners's Guide to Safe Digging or call 1-800-940-3447."

Join us Tuesday, April 22nd, 6:30 pm McClure Place - 533 Greenwood Place, for an everything you need to know about Dutch Elm Disease treatment, prevention & more!

SAVING OUR ELMS, EARTH DAY, APRIL 22nd, 2025

In the heart of our Wolseley community there are about 150 elm trees on Westminster & Wolseley Avenues alone!

Dutch Elm
Disease kills 10 to 15 of these trees -EACH YEAR.

At this rate, in 10 years, there could be no Elm trees left on either of our primary streets...

WRA Tree Committee's next neighbourhood project focusses on preserving these avenues, our gateways to the neighbourhood, & heart of our community!

We've all seen the "orange dot of death"  on too many elms in our neighbourhood.

With recent developments in tree care, there is now something that can be done!

Preserving as many mature elm trees as possible will allow newly planted trees to mature beneath a flourishing canopy of majestic elms.

The City of Morden, the neighbourhood of Glenelm & our own Wolseley residents on Newman Street have all had great success.

Come learn more at our WRA event & see how you too can save your street's elm trees!

These recipients represent what makes Winnipeg special - people who give their time & energy to build a better future for all of us. I’m proud to recognize their efforts..."

Nearly 600 nominations were received, with a selection committee reviewing each nomination to select the medal recipients.

[I'm] so proud of the recipients from the Daniel McIntyre Ward [who've] made remarkable contributions to our community. "The city is framing this as: ‘We either have a choice between untreated sewage going in the river or it overflowing into people’s homes & basements... -Other municipalities that have successfully dealt with their combined sewer problems… They don’t frame it that way. They say there are alternatives... A green plan needs to be included in the city’s blueprints to upgrade the combined sewer system... particularly as the changing climate makes storms & heavier precipitation more frequent." -Marianne Cerilli

TREE SURVEY 2021

Community rallies behind seniors
- Winnipeg Free Press - Metro News

By: Katlyn Streilein
Tuesday, Jun. 15, 2021

Wolseleyite Professor Dr. Judith Harris
Wolseley Residents’ Association wants to explore ways the neighbourhood can support its seniors during an upcoming

"Idea Jam" virtual meeting on Mon., June 21 at 7 p.m.

The meeting, which is open to all, will feature guest speakers who’ll lead discussions around alternative approaches to senior
care & a new initiative the group is kicking off later this month.

Judith Harris is a professor of Urban & Inner-City Studies at the University of Winnipeg & new addition to the Wolseley neighbourhood.

Harris recently presented on the topic of long-term care for seniors at a national conference, & WRA chair Marianne Cerilli invited her to share her work.

"I can get people’s feedback, & they can comment, & we can have a good discussion," Harris said.
She plans to speak to community-based senior care, a model that many communities — Canada & abroad — have adopted & found to be successful.

The notion of home care co-ops & the possibility of adopting a similar system in Winnipeg — or right in Wolseley — will underpin the discussion.

"My impression of Wolseley over the last six months is that it is a very friendly neighbourhood," Harris said.
"Community is really important for keeping seniors healthy and helping them to stay at home as much as they can."
Community is really important for keeping seniors healthy and helping them to stay at home as much as they can."
- Dr. Judith Harris, Wolseleyite & Professor at University of Winnipeg
During the talk, Harris will focus on three main lessons she & long-time co-op advocate & industrial relations scholar Russ Christianson collaborated on
this year. Harris will lead with points about how the pandemic highlighted flaws in the personal care home system, particularly the for-profit private facilities.

Next, she’ll move on to an examination of ageism & how it helped fuel the COVID-19 long-term care home crisis.
"We treat seniors as if they’re not full members of society," Harris said. The subject of senior care is familiar to both she & Christianson as they’ve both had
experiences with long-term care homes in their respective families. "For us, it’s a personal issue," she said.

The final topic in Harris’ presentation will be the undervaluing of personal service workers. "They’re underpaid. They have irregular hours, & they don’t have
any benefits," she said.

Harris recommends the book Humanizing the Economy by John Restakis for those interested in learning more about co-operatives.

WRA secretary Larissa Skakum Boning will be the evening’s second speaker. Skakum Boning is leading the new initiative to distribute window signs to older
adults in Wolseley that they can use to signal to other members of the community that they’d like to be visited or need support. "Sometimes it just means
that, ‘I need someone to help me with groceries’ or ‘help to get to an appointment, & they may not know who to contact," Skakum Boning said.
-The signs will have a minimalistic ‘thumbs-up’ or ‘thumbs-down’ design.
There’s lots of seniors living in this neighbourhood, & some of them are living alone," she said.
"We don’t want anyone to be alone during all of this." - Larissa Skakum Boning, WRA Secretary

"There’s lots of seniors living in this neighbourhood, & some of them are living alone," she said. "We don’t want anyone to be alone during all of this."

Harris said the signage will be an opportunity for some seniors to invite social interaction. "This idea of putting a sign in your window if you’d like to
have somebody come & have tea or talk to you at your door. I think that would help a lot of people," she said.

Throughout the meeting, participants will be invited to suggest any other wellness ideas the group can tackle in the upcoming months.

Wolseley residents irate after healthy trees stripped from park - Winnipeg Free Press

By: Malak Abas
Wednesday, Mar. 24, 2021

The beauty and the refuge of the park has really been lost," - Marianne Cerrelli, WRA president
Omands Park Hydro Deforestation

JOHN WOODS / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Manitoba Hydro made the decision to remove the trees after power outages
during the unprecedented storm in October 2019

"As thousands of trees are being chopped down across the city in an attempt to quell Dutch elm disease, around 200 healthy [trees] been
stripped from Omand Park.

Now members of the Wolseley Residents' Association are calling out Manitoba Hydro, which hired a private company to remove the trees
— mainly healthy Manitoba maples — along the rail line on the western edge of the park at the end of February.
"The residents have no input, have no notice, & we have no say... the maples could have been pruned back, & there
should be a plan now for Manitoba Hydro to take responsibility to replant this area."
- Marianne Cerilli, chairwoman of the WRA association.
A spokesman for Manitoba Hydro said the trees were chopped down, rather than pruned, in an attempt to curb costs to the crown utility.
"If we prune, we know in a few years we’ll have to come back & repeat it," he said.
"This is extremely costly."

Making a case for trees Group hopes putting price on urban forests builds economic argument for preservation - Winnipeg Free Press

Trees Please

From left: Jean Altemeyer, Roxana Mazur, Erna Buffie and Emma Durand-Wood from Trees Please Winnipeg are concerned that diseased trees being cut down in the city are not being replaced, leaving only stumps behind. (John Woods / Winnipeg Free Press)
"What happens when you see trees as assets — & assign a value to them — they suddenly start to take on importance in all levels of planning. So you don’t go ahead with an infill project without considering the trees. You don’t go ahead with a road project without considering how you’re going to incorporate & make it possible for trees to thrive on the roadway,"
-
Trees Please member & Green Committee chair for the Wolseley Residents Association Erna Buffie.
...Emotions are running high as Winnipeggers watch more trees get axed from their neighbourhoods & favourite parks this spring — but emotions don’t fit into municipal policy development very well.
-So, a group of Winnipeggers is proposing a more actionable solution: put a price tag on the trees & then invest in them accordingly....
the group Trees Please Winnipeg, a community tree advocacy organization. The group is asking for those very real financial benefits trees provide to be incorporated into how the City of Winnipeg and Government of Manitoba considers the urban forest.
"What happens when you see trees as assets — & assign a value to them — they suddenly start to take on importance in all levels of planning. So you don’t go ahead with an infill project without considering the trees. You don’t go ahead with a road project without considering how you’re going to incorporate & make it possible for trees to thrive on the roadway," said Trees Please member & Green Committee chair for the Wolseley Residents Association Erna Buffie.

... a new direction for Winnipeg, other cities like Saskatoon & Selkirk have begun incorporating these principles into how assets are managed. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities has released a guidebook on how to properly integrate the benefits of natural infrastructure into asset management strategies.

...Trees Please Winnipeg submitted proposals to the federal & provincial governments during public consultations ahead of new budgets being released this spring asking for stable funding to be provided for the maintenance of urban forests given all the benefits they provide. There is constant money for roadways & other built infrastructure, but not for trees & natural infrastructure, Buffie explains.

In 2014, TD Bank published a special report demonstrated the economic benefit of urban forests & assigned dollar figure values to trees in several Canadian cities based on their different climates, geographies & city densities...
"It’s about money, but it’s also about a change in the way people think about trees. I think we really need to reorient the way we view trees & start viewing them as something that’s a huge value, both to human & environmental health," ...

Closing the loop on poop - Winnipeg Free Press Op-Ed

WRA Chair Marianne Cerrilli' Winnipeg Free Press Op-ED highlights need for 'new approach' to our community's sewage system... & calls for new WRA Committee Group to brainstorm fresh ideas

Marianne Cerrili Close the Loop on Poop
Sewage overflow from the storm drain at Clifton Street spilled onto the Assiniboine River on Feb. 22.
[W]e can think outside this box, & close the loop on poop. Nature is cyclical. In nature, waste can be a resource.'
- Marianne Cerilli, WRA President
“These arguments are an attempt to incite division and conflict between those of us that would like the city to change its approach to sewage and those who think it’s a simple choice between basement flooding or river pollution..,
...[W]e can think outside this box, & close the loop on poop. Nature is cyclical. In nature, waste can be a resource... In many places, human waste is collected as fuel. It’s used to create energy [& fed] into electrical grids &, —in some cases power pumps, used in #sewagetreatment. The billions needed for #CSO over the next few decades could be diverted into an innovative system to capture sludge & solids from the sewage system in Winnipeg.
A citywide #communitygroup is forming to develop a #proposal, to reject the status quo, & ensure we create a #newapproach for our sewage system — a system that will make us better stewards & will protect ...rather than pushing this problem into the future for our kids & grandkids to pay for.

Residents seek to cultivate Wolseley winter wonderland - Winnipeg Free Press

Wolseley's Ad Hoc 'Wonderland Committee'  making the press...

MIKAELA MACKENZIE / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS -Michael Bennett chips the snow off the steps at the Aubrey access point to the river trail in Winnipeg on Friday.

Micheak Bennett

By: Katie May
Friday, Feb. 12, 2021

"Over his more than 30 years as a Wolseley resident, Michael Bennett has come to see the Winnipeg neighbourhood's riverbank as a gateway to a winter wonderland.
The retired teacher compares the panorama along the frozen Assiniboine River to the beachfront views he once enjoyed while vacationing in Mexico — of opposite, but equal, beauty.
"The river is a completely different world in the city. When you get down to the river, you are experiencing the world through a completely different lens, and that lens is so gorgeous and so beautiful," he says earnestly.
But getting down there is often slippery, and not always easy.
"To suggest that only able-bodied people have the right to see that beautiful gem in our backyards is extremely selfish in my mind," Bennett says."...

...In recent weeks, the group of roughly eight, calling themselves Wolseley Winter Wonderland Committee, held online meetings focused on finding ways to maintain the trails and make them easier for everyone to use.
They decided to put forth a more organized effort to shovel and sand the public river access points, mark the ski trails and walking paths, and launched an online fundraiser to cover volunteers' out-of-pocket expenses. Within a couple of days, donors chipped in 25 per cent of the $5,000 goal."...
