WRA Tree Committee: Tree Inoculation Update

WRA Trees Committee InnoculationAs many of you are well aware, this spring our WRA Tree Committee launched “SAVE OUR ELMS” — a project
preserving elms on our two main streets - Wolseley & Westminster
Avenues.

PHASE 1 is complete! - Our neighbourhood campaign in June & July raised just over $27,000, including a $5000 grant from Assiniboine Credit Union & generous support from Green Drop.

These funds allowed us to inoculate 57of the 165 elm trees on Wolseley & Westminster Avenues!

Arborists, the City of Winnipeg Forestry Branch, & WRA Tree Committee members chose a tree sections which would help ensure success for a“partial inoculation”. -This type of root inoculation protects a tree for three years.

PHASE 2 - Planned for Fall 2025. We're launch our neighbourhood business campaign & seeking more grant funding.

Our goal is to inoculate the remaining healthy elms on Wolseley & Westminster Avenues.

Residents who wish to inoculate trees on their own property, AND additionalWolseley neighbourhood streetswanting innoculation as a group, MUST collect funds themselves & may contact Green Drop later summer 2026 for the same discount as our WRA Tree project.

More information will be available as the time approaches.

Please connect with the WRA Trees Committee if you want to lead as your own Street/ Block Tree Captain.

The strategy's focus is a 10 year period from 2025 to 2035, with inoculations occurring every threeyears.

Community support started our project, & we aim to secure long-range funding to support the project.

AND - THANK YOU!!

HUGE Thank-you to ALL our generousWolseley residents who supported our community's initial fundraising campaign.

While we can acknowledge individual GoFundMe donations via that platform, our website is the only way we can reach those donors who e-transferred funds or who wrote a cheque.

Any & ALL donation sizes are greatly appreciated! Every donation dollar counts to preserve our Wolseley Urban Forest Canopy.

So, to all of you THANK-YOU SO MUCH!  🌱

Want to ADOPT A TREE?: Several donors gave enough to cover the fullcost of inoculating one tree. Check our website for this list of supporters

WRA Garden Committee Update:
Halter Park Omand's Orchard - Omand's Food Forest

VOLUNTEER ORCHARD PLANTERS NEEDED
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3rd, 3 - 6:30 PM

- Pizza Dinner to Follow -

Let's grow a Food Forest at Omands Creek!

Our WRA Garden Committeereceived a grant from Trees for Life to plant a native food forest at Halter Park at Omand's Creek!

We're so excited to begin the planting, & we need your help to make this happen!

An arbour company's planting the majority of trees (90 trees & shrubs). Our grant still requires community engagement from at least 20Wolseleyite community volunteers, -ideally at the initial planting stage of our orchard.

We've secured all of the approvals required from our granters & the city, we still need commitment from additional community volunteerslike you to get this project to fruition, -or it won't happen!

Come help our Omand's Orchard blossom! -Be an inaugural Omand's Orchard planteFriday, October 3rd from 3 -6:30 PM!

Planting starts 3 PM & ends 6:30 PM, or sooner if completed earlier.

We're planting 15 haskap & 15 saskatoon bushes. We'll mulch, stalk & fence these bushes.

Our celebratory pizza dinner arrives during the planting!

Halter Park, between Raglan Avenue & Omand's Creek proper -close to the Portage Avenue Mennonite Church, is our orchard site

It'll be a big job, so it would be great to recruit a minimum of 10 capable volunteers to help!

This is our community's opportunity to add immense biodiversity to this Wolseley area; increase the health of the riparian zone; add a source of organic food for both animal & human visitors  -while overall continuing to add beauty to this often overlooked section of Omand's Creek.

See you there neighbours - Friday, October 3rd, 2025!  🌱

WRA Chair's Message:

Warm greetings to the Wolseley Community,

As I write this, a beam of sunlight is streaming through the room & highlighting the lush green trees, crisp fall-like air & the chirping of birds. It is the first weekend of the new school year, & many families are making the shift from the relaxation & slower pace of summer to the excitement & energy of the school season. -I wish everyone in all capacities a wonderful transition from summer to fall.

The folks at the WRA are also gearing up for a new season, & we wanted to highlight some of the past summer's activities, & offer a preview of upcoming events.

I personally thank the wonderful WRA Board of Directors & our amazing Committees making up the working part of our Residents' Association. -Together, we all work to represent & support our community, helping to make it a wonderful place to live, work & play.

The WRA Trees Committee ran a very ambitious & successful campaign to “SAVE THE ELMS” of Wolseley.  A huge thank you to the community for donating nearly $25,000 to start the process of inoculating our majestic Elms of Wolseley & Westminster Avenues.

It's fabulous to see these iconic trees receiving treatment over the last few weeks rather than being cut down due to Dutch Elm Disease. -It indicates a shift from despair, to hope for their future. It also hearkens back to the very first iteration of the WRA which was started to save the famous “Wolseley Elm”!

Please stay posted, as this is just the start of the WRA work to save our mature trees & help plant new, thriving & diverse replacements!

Our WRA Gardens Committee is in the midst of harvest time for the community gardens in Vimy Ridge Park. Not only do the gardens allow our residents the chance to grow their own food, but also create a wonderful sense of community & companionship.

The committee has also been working hard at securing funding for new plantings, including a community orchard - Omand's Food Forest -at Halter Park, the north side of Omand's Creek.

Their fruit orchard in Vimy Ridge Parkis becoming more established, & is looking great. Please feel free to visit these sights on your walks, runs & outdoor activities.

This year, we have several eventsplanned, including our Second Annual Trivia Night! Mark your calendars for this exciting & entertaining event during the February Winter Carnival at RA Steen.

We're also excited to host several workshops including:

  • Transportation in Wolseley
  • Townhall with Elected Officials
  • Wolseley Home Retrofit & Energy Efficiency
  • Wolseley History Lecture
  • Spring Clean-Up.

Details will follow in subsequent newsletters, posters & online. We look forward to seeing you at the events!

In the meantime, all of us at the WRA wish the community a wonderful fall season, & invite you to be in touch with any questions or community ideas.

Sincerely,

Ross Brownlee

Chair of the Wolseley Residents' Association

Save the Date for our Trees Committee Dutch Elm Disease Seminar - April 2025!

Join us Tuesday, April 22nd, 6:30 pm for an everything you need to know about Dutch Elm Disease treatment, prevention & more!

SAVING OUR ELMS, EARTH DAY, APRIL 22nd, 2025

In the heart of our Wolseley community there are about 150 elm trees on Westminster & Wolseley Avenues alone!

Dutch Elm
Disease kills 10 to 15 of these trees -EACH YEAR.

At this rate, in 10 years, there could be no Elm trees left on either of our primary streets...

WRA Tree Committee's next neighbourhood project focusses on preserving these avenues, our gateways to the neighbourhood, & heart of our community!

We've all seen the "orange dot of death"  on too many elms in our neighbourhood.

With recent developments in tree care, there is now something that can be done!

Preserving as many mature elm trees as possible will allow newly planted trees to mature beneath a flourishing canopy of majestic elms.

The City of Morden, the neighbourhood of Glenelm & our own Wolseley residents on Newman Street have all had great success.

Come learn more at our WRA event & see how you too can save your street's elm trees!

See you there!

Wolseley Construction Update

Wolseley Construction Updates

Wolseley Avenue Update

City of Winnipeg Engage Website:

"Construction of the Wolseley Avenue neighbourhood greenway between Raglan Road & Maryland Street is now complete!

You might have seen tubes on Wolseley Avenue & Westminster Avenue in October 2024. These tubes collect traffic information, like how fast cars are going & how many people are using the road. This will help determine whether the new traffic calming elements are helping us meet our technical criteria for an all ages & abilities route.

We also want to ask people in the neighborhood how they feel about the changes. The community & stakeholder engagement we previously planned for November 2024 is delayed because construction took longer than anticipated.

We want to make sure you’ve had enough time to fully experience the changes, so we’ll come back to ask for your feedback in late spring 2025"

Check the Engage Winnipeg Link Here

Omand's Bridge Update
City of Winnipeg Engage Website:

"We’re moving to the next stage of planning for a new bridge and accessible pathways. On December 12, 2024 Council approved the Report of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works(External link) to start planning & designing a new pedestrian bridge & accessible pathways.

The next step is hiring a consultant to work on the preliminary design of the Omand Park Pedestrian/Cycle Bridge replacement.

We used what we heard from you to help define the scope of this contract. Because of your input, we are asking prospective consultants to commit to:

  • Improving accessibility
  • Protecting the natural environment
  • Addressing flood risks

Once we award the contract, we will work with the consultant to prepare design options. We will bring these design options to you later this year for feedback.

Sign up for project updates, and we’ll let you know when engagement begins!"

Wolseley Autumn 2024

Welcome Wolseley Autumn 2024!

Wolseley Burdock Pull

Follow up from our First Wolseley Great Burdock Pull 2024 at Omands Park -a Huge Success!

Kudos again to our Trees Committee & Our Greenspace & Parks Committee, our Wolseley Community Gardens Committee, the handful of eager Wolseleyite neighbours, along with The City Of Winnipeg for helping to facilitate a truly successful community pull.

Our city specialist helped with demonstrating safe extraction & disposal of the invasive species -explaining the serious need to do so in our urban forest, while our Trees & Greenspaces Committees supplied gloves, bags, shears & snacks to our hardworking volunteers.

Wolseley burdock Pull

In only TWO short hours we collected an astounding SIX extra-large sized bags of of burdock along the Wolseley Ave. | Raglan Rd. entrance to the park & southeast side of our Omand's Creek!

Please message us if you care about the health of our Wolseley Urban forest& would like to play a role in ensuring the continued health of our community's trees & parks!

Vimy Victory Garden Summer 2024

The Vimy Victory Garden produced an abundance of produce! The allotment beds are being cared for by 22 individual families from the community. Produce from the two big community beds was recently donated to Harvest Manitoba -thanks to help from Broadway-First Faith Community who help with one of the beds. Our fruit orchard also produced ripe fruit!

Manitoba Masters Gardeners' Tour 2024

On Saturday, July 20th, the Wolseley Community Garden was a tour stop for the Manitoba Master Gardeners' annual garden tour which saw over 100 visitors. The purpose of the tour was to provide visitors with inspiration for their own gardens & to learn about environmentally friendly gardening practices.

Visitors are encouraged to take a self-guided tour & enjoy the interpretive signage describing the various garden nodes throughout the park

Vimy Victory Garden Summer 2024 - 2

Vimy Victory Garden is in its fourth growing season - established in 2021 by the Wolseley Community Gardens' Committee (a sub-committee of the Wolseley Residents Association), &located in Vimy Ridge Memorial Park, the garden features 22 allotment raised garden beds, alongside two raised community garden beds &a native plant pollinator garden. The park is also home to an interspersed orchard, planted with apples, cherries, & plum trees, as well as berry bushes, all being tended to by community members!

Have a wonderful Wolseley Season!

Autumnal Wolseley Greenway Updates

Wolseley Avenue now has a permanent reduced speed limit of 30km/ hr in effect 24 hours per day, 7 days a week!

The curb extensions & new light beacons (RRFBs) have been installed; the main items left to install before November are the 11 speed tables along Wolseley Avenue.

Construction of the Wolseley Avenue greenway between Raglan Road & Walnut Street began in July. Once construction is complete, the City of Winnipeg will conduct a survey through their engagement process.

Check the City of Winnipeg's website for more information on the Wolseley Avenue greenway. The "Phase 4" folder under the "Documents" contains detailed maps.

Lipton Street Renewal Progress

We see signs of normal street activity stirring up on Lipton Street!

Looks like residents of both Lipton blocks from Palmerston- Wolseley & Wolseley-Westminster have regained full access to their newly restored street, front parking & all!

We are happy to report broken sidewalk sections, road pavement, & boulevards are repaired!

Rumour has it even the infamous unofficial Lipton Street traffic bump (ie. sunken road section) between the Palmerston-Wolseley block has been safely corrected!!

...We are so happy the whole street was finally finished before the first snowfall! Kudos to the construction teams & the City of Winnipeg Public Works for getting this done quickly! -We especially appreciate the care workers took with our community's Wolseley Urban Forest!

Huge Thank you to our sponsors!  Wolseley 2024 Sponsors

Big thanks goes out to our local credit union Belgian Alliance Credit Union at 1117 Portage Avenue for their donation!

Thank you again to Tall Grass Prairie Bakery, a veritable Wolseley institution at 859 Westminster Avenue for their enduring support!

And of course, always a GREAT shout out to our City Of Winnipeg for their continued financial support, especially towards funding many of the endeavors & activities made possibly through our Wolseley Community Gardens Committee!

Generous financial supporters from our community, along with countless volunteer hours from our neighbours, enable us to provide exceptional programming, keep our community regularly informed, & continue to act as a positive voice for our residents

Orchard Planting - 11:00am-1:00pm Saturday, May 25th at
Vimy Ridge Park

Join us at Vimy Ridge Park to expand our Vimy Community Orchard.

We'll be planting a variety of fruit trees & shrubs throughout the park.

We'd love your helping hand!

Please bring spades shovels & gloves if you can! We'll also have a limited availability of tools on site.

We hope to see you there!

On the topic of tree planting, Wolseleyite & tree advocate Erna Buffie published a recent op-ed on tree bylaws that's well worth the read:

Wolseley Avenue is now a Neighbourhood Greenway

At Winnipeg's City Council meeting on April 25th, councillors voted in favour of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works' recommendation: "Wolseley Avenue be designated a permanent neighbourhood greenway with a reduced speed limit (30 km/hr) in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week, on a permanent basis."

Many have already noticed the sign changes!

Wolseley Ave is now one of fourteen Neighbourhood Greenways
with a posted speed limit of 30 km/hr.

Watch for our mid-June Park & Tree Meeting date
in Vimy Ridge Park

Our parks & garden folks have been busy engaging with community to dream up enhancements to Vimy, Omand & Aubrey Parks while securing grants for new trees.

We hope you'll join us in June to look at park plans; share your ideas; & learn more how you can save & plant your own piece of our Wolseley urban forest.

Did you know BURDOCK needs removing in Omand Park?

During our recent excursion with a City of Winnipeg Naturalist, we learned the number one priority for our tree passionate volunteers is to cut Burdock out of Omand Park!

Two to three years of culling will allow many more trees & shrubs to thrive.

It's going to be hard work. Good tools & clothing are necessary, -the burrs are sticky & sharp! Our results will be well worth it, as we work together to benefit nature in our community!

Watch for the date to join our end of August
Community Burdock Removal Event!

Passionate about Wolseley trees?

Concerned about the status of our urban forest? -

Join our Green team to lead our Trees Committee! We could do so much more for our urban forest with more dedicated volunteers!
