Transportation Committee

Dusk Biking in Wolseley

Last year, the WRA Transportation Committee surveyed Wolseley residents to hear your thoughts on transportation. As we use this data to better our neighborhood, we wanted to share these results with you.

One of the clearest takeaways from the report was the widespread support for a reduced residential speed limit. 60% of respondents expressed support for a speed limit of 30km/h within Wolseley, while only 26% opposed this change.

These results have already informed our engagement with various City of Winnipeg officials. We are hopeful these ongoing conversations will result in a safe, sustainable, &  efficient transportation network for everyone in our neighbourhood.

WRA 2022 Transport Survey - 30 km Support Results

See the FULL WRA Transport Survey 2021 Results & Analysis HERE!

The current WRA Transportation Committee was established in January 2021.

Our resident members participate in monthly meeting via zoom.

As a committee we've  identified several areas of concern related to traffic calming throughout Wolseley including:

  • Winnipeg Public Transit bus number 10
  • Open streets bike/walk paths
  • Reducing speed limits in Wolseley to 30 km
  • Sunday Family Cruise night on Portage Avenue.

Between December 2, 2021 and January 26, 2022, the Wolseley Residents’ Association Transportation Subcomittee ran a survey to understand community members’:

  • Modes of transportation year-round
  • Feelings of (and barriers to) safety when they commute in Wolseley
  • Support or opposition for proposed safety strategies
  • Opinions on the City’s Bike/Walk engagement

We advertised the survey online and by delivering paper leaflets to each house and several apartment buildings in Wolseley.  599 Wolseley residents completed the survey.

Of the three proposed safety strategies—piloting a 30 km speed limit throughout the neighbourhood, making Wolseley Ave. an open street year-round from 8 am to 8 pm, and no right turns onto Maryland during rush hour—piloting a reduced speed limit had the most community support: Sixty per cent of residents surveyed voiced support for this option. Another 15 per cent were indifferent, leaving only one quarter opposed.

Whether commuting by foot, mobility device, vehicle, bike, or bus, most respondents said they feel safe getting around in our neighbourhood. That said, a notable minority of cyclists (15%) say they feel unsafe when cycling in Wolseley; when asked why they felt unsafe, vehicle traffic was the most common response. This appears to be somewhat reciprocal, as the most of the 19 motorists who reported feeling unsafe cited cyclists as their top safety concern.

As for the city’s bike-walk engagement, most of those who participated had positive or neutral impressions. The main reason for not participating was lack of awareness.

The results of this survey will inform the Subcommittee’s next steps.”

Results of our survey will help us petition our city's 'Winnipeg Active Transportation Committee' to implement the identified traffic calming initiatives!
