Wolseley Trees

Inoculation Update!

Wondering which trees in our neighbourhood have had a chance to be innauculated this past summer?

Follow the link to see the live updated map here!

Thank you to all who contributed!

You have all collectively let us surpass our most recent milestone!

Our Wolseley tree committee garnered $27k       this past season, enabling us to start the first round of inoculations!

Phase 1 is complete! - Our neighbourhood campaign in June & July raised just over $27,000, including a $5000 grant from Assiniboine Credit Union & generous support from Green Drop.

These funds allowed us to inoculate 57of the 165 elm trees on Wolseley & Westminster Avenues!

Arborists, the City of Winnipeg Forestry Branch, & WRA Tree Committee members chose a tree sections which would help ensure success for a“partial inoculation”. -This type of root inoculation protects a tree for three years.

WE'RE WORKING TO SAVE OUR WOLSELEY’S ELM TREES — & ARE INVITING YOU TO JOIN US!

You might've found our green Help Save Our Elms leaflet in your mailbox & wondered why we are asking for your money?... Maybe you’ve seen "orange dots” on mature elms — orwitnessed huge, beautiful Wolseley elms being cut down by the City.  -Bothare because of Dutch Elm Disease (DED).

...HOWEVER – DUTCH ELM DISEASE CAN BE PREVENTED!

 – through inoculation with Arbotect 20-S, & we're raising funds for this community inoculation!

Fact: “Arbotect 20-S” is the only fungicide proven to provide three years of protection for elmtrees against DED. It's injected into an elm tree’s root flare. When administered by certified arborists, it's environmentally safe & highly effective.

Fact: A healthy elm, inoculated every 3 years with Arbotect 20 -S, can live over 200 years.

ACTION: We're working with an arborist strategically selecting & inoculating over30 healthy elms on Westminster or Wolseley Avenues THIS August.

REQUEST: We need your help, & there is still time to donate!

Phase I of the Campaign to Help Save our Elms is coming to a close. Our ultimate goal is $100,000. We've already raised more than $20,000 in less than two months from generous neighbours & a $5000 grant from Assiniboine CreditUnion!

THIS Tuesday, July 22, 2025is our deadline to collect funds for the Phase One inoculation cycle, as arborists need time to assess tree health, & order supplies.

WE THANK YOU — &, MORE IMPORTANTLY FUTURE WOLSELEY GENERATIONS THANK YOU!

Pat McCarthy-Briggs, lead, on behalf of The Wolseley Residents' Association Tree Committee

NOTE: Homeowners are welcome to inoculate trees on their property when this project is underway.

You will receive the “Wolseley project discount” (about 10%).

YOU KNOW?

Westminster & Wolseley Avenues are the gateways to our neighbourhood. There are only 170 elm trees left on these two streets that create Wolseley’s distinct character!

Dutch Elm Disease (DED) is killing an average of 20 elm trees every year on Wolseley & Westminster alone.

-If nothing is done, in 10 years every elm tree will be gone on these two streets.

BUT ELM TREES CAN BE SAVED FROM DED!

Saving Wolseley's Elms Project

The Wolseley neighbourhood has been long known & loved for its beautiful canopy of mature elms, particularly on our gateway streets - Wolseley & Westminster. Over the past few years, we have noticed tree after tree marked & cut down due to Dutch Elm Disease (DED). Currently, about 10-15 elms are being killed by DED each year due to DED.

If nothing is done, there will be no elms left on these streets in 10 years!

DED can be prevented! The WRA Tree Committee is seeking funding to inoculate between 150-200 mature elm boulevard trees on Wolseley’s two major streets & thoroughfares – Westminster Avenue & Wolseley Avenue – by way of a root injection treatment that would provide these trees immunity from Dutch Elm Disease for a 3-year period (following which subsequent treatments would be required).

This initiative is the first part of the WRA’s Urban Forest Strategy for Wolseley, aiming to preserve our mature elm canopy, slow the rate of DED tree mortality & in turn provide time for replanted trees to grow under a mature tree canopy.

The strategy will focus on a 10-year period (2025-2035), with inoculations occurring every 3 years.

We aim to secure long-range funding but we need your community support to get started!

How Can I Help?

Wolseley has a long histoy of working togther to protect our trees. Please consider donating to save our trees today!

  • Donate
    • If every Wolseley household donated $50 we could fund the first round of inoculation!
  • Advocate
    • Talk to your neighbours, share online, & help spread the word
  • Volunteer
    • We need help canvassing & distributing flyers.

Our Plan

We will work with a licensed arborist to inoculate all suitable trees in late summer.
Ultimately, three cycles of inoculation will protect our elms for 10 years, providing a protective canopy for newly planted trees to grow.

Poject Cost

This project will cost about $100,000 every 3-year cycle.

If we do not raise enough money this year, but have enough funds to begin the program, we will start by inoculating the highest-impact areas on a 3-year rotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

1 What is DED?

Dutch Elm Disease (DED) is a fast-spreading fungal infection that is fatal to elm trees. It is primarily spread by elm bark beetles, which carry the fungus from tree to tree as they feed. DED can also spread underground through interconnected root systems (root grafts) between adjacent elms.

2 How many trees has Wolseley lost?

In just the last two years, Wolseley has lost 250 out of 1200 elm trees to DED. That’s 20%! If nothing is done to prevent the spread of DED, Wolseley could lose nearly all its elm trees in just a decade (Source: Trees Winnipeg).

3 Has this been successful before?

Inoculating mature elms from DED has been successful in Wolseley on Newman St., Lenore St., in the Glenelm Neighbourhood, & Morden, Manitoba.

4 Won’t our elms die of old age anyways?

Wolseley’s elms are only 80-100 years old. Healthy elms can live for 200-250 years!

05 How are trees chosen?

To maximize the project’s success, trees in suitable locations will be tested by an arborist to make sure they are not infected with DED. A tree will be inoculated only after it is confirmed healthy.

6 What is Arbotect 20-S?

Arbotect 20-S is the only fungicide proven to provide three full growing seasons of protection against DED when injected into an elm tree’s root flare. When administered by certified arborists it is environmentally safe & highly effective.

7 How is this initiative funded?

The initiative is supported by the generosity of local residents, businesses, & community groups. The City of Winnipeg is not funding this project at this time. The Tree Committee is working on securing long-range funding for future cycles of inoculation.

8 What happens if we don’t hit our $100,000 fundraising goal?

If we do not raise enough money this year, but have enough funds to begin the program, we will start by inoculating the highest-impact areas on a 3-year rotation.

9 What if we raise MORE than our goal?

We will identify & inoculate other high-value elms (e.g. at R.A. Steen) or adjacent boulevards to Wolseley & Westminster Aves.

SAVING OUR ELMS, EARTH DAY, APRIL 22nd, 2025

~ FREE EVENT ~

In the heart of our Wolseley community there are about 150 elm trees on Westminster & Wolseley Avenues alone!
Dutch Elm Disease kills 10 to 15 of these trees -EACH YEAR.
-At this rate, in 10 years, there could be no Elm trees left on either of our primary streets...

WRA Tree Committee's next neighbourhood project focusses on preserving these avenues, our gateways to the neighbourhood, & heart of our community!

We've all seen the "orange dot of death" on too many elms in our neighbourhood.
With recent developments in tree care, there is now something that can be done!

Preserving as many mature elm trees as possible will allow newly planted trees to mature beneath a flourishing canopy of majestic elms.

The City of Morden, the neighbourhood of Glenelm & our own Wolseley residents on Newman Street have all had great success.

Come learn more at our WRA event & see how WE CAN SAVE our street's elm trees!
